American Board of Family Medicine requires its graduates to maintain certification through an ongoing process of continuing medical education, medical knowledge review, patient care oversight through chart audits, practice-based learning through quality improvement projects and retaking the board certification examination every 7 to 10 years.

Definitions

Family Medicine (also known as Family Practice) is comprehensive health care for people of all ages; the specialist is named a family physician or family doctor. Family physicians also provide care to their patients when they need to be hospitalized. Family physicians coordinate the care of their patients when they need to be referred to other specialists.

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O. or DO
) is a professional doctoral degree for physicians and surgeons offered by medical schools in the United States. Holders of D.O. degrees can become licensed as

Osteopathic Physicians who have equivalent rights, privileges, and responsibilities as physicians with a Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.). One notable difference between D.O. and M.D. training is that D.O. training adds 300 - 500 hours studying techniques for hands-on manipulation of the human musculoskeletal system.

Physician Associate (also known as PAs) are trained medical practitioners who work in teams with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare workers. They examine, diagnose, and treat patients under the supervision of a doctor.
